Whether you are looking to move up within your current company or you are in the middle of a job search, you want to be a desirable candidate. But how do you know which skills make you more employable? There are many things you can do, and the following is a list of the top four ways you can increase your employability in business.

Get Additional Training

One of the quickest ways to improve your employability is to get additional training specific to the job that interests you. You can accomplish this by either enrolling in a class or by pursuing on-the-job training. By getting additional instruction, you are showing employers that you not only want the position you seek, but that you are dedicated and willing to do the work it takes. Additionally, as the Business Journal states, “Overall, training impacts organizational competitiveness, revenue and performance.”

Improve Your Communication Skills

Communication skills are necessary for all business scenarios. You need to be able to communicate well both verbally and in writing. There may be times when you need to speak in front of a group, or you might be asked to write a proposal. Without the proper communication skills this could be a disaster. Brush up on your grammar and writing skills by taking a class. Join a group like Toastmasters where you can work on your speaking skills and gain helpful feedback from peers. Being able to communicate effectively can make all the difference in your employability.

Broaden Your Experiences

Often when you are first starting out, you have to accept positions that are beneath what you want to do. At first this may be disappointing but not if you change your perspective. Take advantage of this situation to learn everything you can about the business. Look for areas outside of your current position where you would like to learn more and pursue rotating into those jobs. Although job rotating is a fairly new concept, many businesses are starting to see how it positively affects them. By rotating you positively affect business as well as increase your employability.

Become Self-Motivated

In the eyes of an employer, hiring an employee who is self-motivated is a plus. It’s impossible for an employer to effectively run a business if they have to assist an employee with their daily tasks. It is equally as hard for an employer if they have to push an employee constantly to get their work done in a timely manner. An employee who takes the initiative to learn their job quickly and complete their work without supervision is desirable. Your employability will increase substantially by being self-motivated.

As you can see, there are several ways you can increase your employability in a business. Training, communication, experience, and self-motivation are four good ways to achieve this.
